Bio

Dr. João L. Cavalcante earned his medical degree from the Federal University of Ceará, Brazil. His training includes residency and chief resident in internal medicine and cardiovascular fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He pursued an advanced cardiovascular imaging training at the Cleveland Clinic where he was appointed chief fellow. There he obtained the highest levels of certification and training (COCATS Level III) in the areas of Interventional and Intraoperative Echocardiography, Cardiovascular CT and Cardiac Magnetic Resonance.

Dr. Cavalcante joined the senior faculty of the University of Pittsburgh Heart & Vascular Institute in September 2012 as Assistant Professor of Medicine. Since then he has been actively involved in the heart team evaluation and echocardiographic guidance of minimally invasive percutaneous procedures. In June/2013, he received by unanimous vote the Edward I. Curtiss Outstanding Teacher Award from the cardiology fellows.

Given his clinical focus and research interests in valvular heart disease,Dr. Cavalcante is the Principal Investigator and Director of the Structural Imaging Core Lab of the multicentric study (CLASS-CMR) investigating the role of multimodality imaging in evaluation of paravalvular leak. In addition, he is the site principal investigator of two other valvular imaging trials (ACRIN 4008, TOPAS III) evaluating the role of Cardiac MRI in patients with severe aortic stenosis and in patients undergoing mitral valve surgery for severe primary mitral regurgitation (MRI-MVS Study). He lectures nationally and internationally, has published over 40 manuscripts, 5 book chapters and has several abstracts presented at national and international meetings.
