Bio

After initial medical training at the JN Medical College, Karnatak University, Belgaum, India, and the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India, Dr. Soman trained as a clinical research fellow at the Northwick Park Hospital and Institute of Medical Research, Harrow, UK. He was awarded a PhD from the University of Surrey, Guildford, UK. He moved to the US in 2000, and completed Internal Medicine residency at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown, PA and fellowships in Cardiology and Advanced Cardiac Imaging at Tufts Medical Center, Boston, MA. He was recruited to UPMC in 2005.


Clinical Interests

Dr. Soman practices clinical cardiology, nuclear cardiology and echocardiography at the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, with areas of focus in the noninvasive diagnosis and risk stratification of coronary artery disease, heart failure and valvular disease, and the management of cardiac disease in patients with chronic kidney disease. Under his direction, the nuclear cardiology laboratory performs high-volume, state-of-the art imaging, and is a national leader in clinical research including the use of a new generation, solid-state SPECT camera and innovative imaging protocols that have enabled significant reductions in radiation dose to patients.
He was selected “Best Doctors of Pittsburgh” in 2013 and 2014.


Academic and Research Interests

Dr. Soman is widely recognized for his contributions to the field of nuclear cardiology. He has co-authored several original research papers, invited editorials, book chapters, national guidelines (American Society of Nuclear Cardiology) and appropriate use criteria (American College of Cardiology). His leadership roles include:

Dr. Soman’s research focuses on the use of radionuclide-based imaging techniques in cardiac diseases, particularly heart failure. Current interests includes the use of myocardial SPECT imaging for left ventricular dyssynchrony assessment, an area in which his group has contributed seminal work (Mati Friehling, Young Investigator Award, ASNC 2010; Saurabh Malhotra, Young Investigator Award, ASNC 2013).

The figure shows left ventricular dyssynchrony assessment using phase analysis of myocardial SPECT in a patient with right ventricular pacing. The upper panel shows a wide phase histogram. The bottom panel shows the sequence of left ventricular mechanical activation overlaid on a perfusion polar map. As expected in a patient with right ventricular pacing, activation begins at the left ventricular apex. All quantitative parameters are automatically derived from a standard myocardial perfusion study.
