Metabolism and Mitochondrial Medicine

The Metabolism and Mitochondrial Medicine Subsection consists of several laboratories that investigate the basic mechanisms of mitochondrial processes and cellular metabolism and translate these findings to cardiovascular physiology and metabolic disease. Currently strengths in the subsection include research in mitochondrial DNA (Dr. Kaufman), mechanisms of regulation of mitochondrial functional (Dr. Chan, Dr. Finkel, Dr. Jurczak, Dr. Scott, Dr. Sparacino-Watkins, Dr. Shiva), metabolic disease (Dr. Kershaw, Dr. Steinhauser, Dr. Yechoor). These labs are highly collaborative within the subsection and throughout the university, with funding from the NIH, AHA, and industry partners. Research in this subsection spans the bed-to-bedside continuum involving studies at the organellar level, in cell and animal models, patient samples, and through clinical trials.
